Inflammatory cytokines are strongly involved in the development of inflammatory heart diseases that can be the leading cause for coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure and other chronic diseases. Among the biomarkers that are accompanying low grade inflammation include IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, macrophage migration inhibitory factor and TNF-α. The role of inflammatory cytokines is considered as a causative factor in the development of atherosclerotic process. The current review points out the importance of measuring the inflammatory biomarkers both IL-1β and IL-6 as a screening laboratory tests with diagnostic and therapeutic value in clinical practice.
